Off Campus Incident

Connecticut State Police have advised UConn Police of the following incident that occurred off campus:
On Saturday 9-5-09 at about 3:29 a.m. a female victim, who resides in Mansfield contacted State Police via 911 to report that a masked male had broken into her apartment through a rear window and reached in and unlocked the door.
State Police Troopers responded to the residence. The crime was secured and additional Troopers conducted a search of the entire area for the suspect. State Police K-9 teams also responded to the scene and continued to search the area without success. All area police departments were notified of this incident and the description of the suspect.
State Police Major Crime Detectives responded to conduct the criminal investigation into this incident. Detectives determined that The masked suspect upon entering the apartment had attempted to sexually assault the female victim while threatening her with a knife. The female victim was able to fight back kicking the male intruder which caused the intruder to flee from the scene. The female victim did not sustain any injury during this incident
The suspect was described as a male who is about 5’7” tall with a thin build.
The scene was processed by State Police Detectives assigned to the Eastern District Major Crime Squad. The Detectives documented and searched the crime scene for physical and forensic evidence. Detectives also located and interviewed witnesses. This active investigation is continuing.
Due to the close proximity of this attack to the University of Connecticut Campus the UCONN Police were notified as were University of Connecticut officials. All Students are reminded to maintain the security of their apartments and residences. In addition all residents are urged to contact police if they see anything suspicious in their neighborhoods or apartment buildings.
The State Police are continuing this investigation.
